Kenneth Walter Hale, age 73, died peacefully at home after a fifteen-month battle with heart disease surrounded by his family and his dog, “Patches” on September 9th, in South Weymouth.

Ken is survived by his wife and teenage sweetheart, Frances (Robertson) Hale, his daughter, Jennifer (Hale) Thibeault and her husband Chris of Bridgewater and their children Nicholas and Sophia; and his son, Stephen Hale and his wife Amy of Wilbraham and their children Joseph, McKenna, and Richard Kenneth; his sister Barbara (Hale) Mayo of Dorchester, his sister Rosemary (Ryan) Golden of Dorchester, many nephews and nieces, his large extended family, friends, and good neighbors where Ken was known as the “rent-a-husband”.  He is preceded in death by his mother Grace (McKenna) Hale-Ryan, his father, Walter Hale, and his niece Lisa Mayo, all residents of Dorchester.

Ken was a loving husband, father, and “Grampy”.  He married Frances Robertson in November of 1966 and the couple welcomed Stephen and Jennifer in 1971 & 1974.  Ken also loved his past dogs: Whiskers, Freckles, and Pepper.

Ken was born and raised in Dorchester.  Ken graduated from Charlestown High School in 1959 and then went on to Northeastern University where he graduated with a degree in Engineering.  Ken worked for the Quincy Shipyard and United Fruit before he began his over 30 year career with the Telephone Company, where he worked as an engineer.

Ken was a communicant and usher of St. Francis Xavier Church in South Weymouth.  Ken volunteered his time with the Weymouth “Meals on Wheels” program and as a member of the Knights of Columbus.  Ken was a member of a local couples bowling league, a member of the Telephone Pioneers, and joined his wife as active members of the Weymouth Garden Club & South Shore Humane Society where he built bird houses.  Ken and Frances enjoyed traveling.  His family and friends will always remember him as a great joke teller, a person who just loved to see others laugh.

The family would like to thank The Colony Center Nursing Home in Abington and South Shore Hospice for their genuine care for Ken during this difficult time.

A funeral mass is scheduled for Tuesday September 15 at 9:30am in St. Francis Xavier Parish, South Weymouth.  Ken’s final resting place will be Lakeview Cemetery in South Weymouth.  Visiting hours will be Monday from 4:00 – 8:00 pm at Quealy Funeral Home, 116 Adams Street, Abington, MA.  In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the South Shore Humane Society on Ken’s behalf or a charity of your choice.
