Richard O. “Cracker” Donovan of Abington, December 1, 2018, age 84.

Loving son of the late D. Leo and Sara J. (Owen) Donovan of Abington.  Loving Husband of Joan M. (Legalle) Donovan of 44 years.

Devoted Brother of D. Leo Donovan of Abington and the late Robert L. Donovan of Abington and Barbara R. Farulla of Needham.

Beloved Uncle of Kevin R. Donovan, Sharon Donovan Hart, Christine A. Donovan, Maureen D. McAlpine, Dennis L. Donovan and Michael P. Donovan Sr. all of Abington, Diane M. Fullerton of Florida, Kathleen M. Maple of Quincy, Joseph L. Farulla of Norwood, Elayne M. Farinella of Canton and Mary C. Brennan of Scituate. Loving Great Uncle to sixteen grand nieces and nephews.

“Cracker” was a proud graduate of Abington High School class of “1951”.  After his early career as an Insurance agent for the John Hancock Insurance Company, Cracker devoted his life to the service of the Town and residents of Abington in many capacities.

Cracker served as a Call Firefighter, Park Commissioner, (1958-1961). Treasurer-Collector (1970-1974) and Abington School Committee (1962-1971) serving as Chairman for 8 years.

Cracker played proudly for the Old Town Football League. He was a communicant and usher of St. Bridget’s Parish and a member of St. Vincent De Paul Society, Knights of Columbus 5254 and the American Legion.  Cracker proudly served his country in the United States Army.

Perhaps his greatest service to the people of Abington was as President and CEO (1991-1998) of the North Abington Co-Operative Bank (now Abington Bank), Treasurer and CEO (1973-1991), Director (1988-2009), Emeritus Director (2009-2012). Cracker also served on the Loan, Community Relations, and Nominating Committees. Cracker was known for his personal care of and friendship to so many seeking mortgages and financial assistance in the good and challenging times in life.

Cracker’s easy manner, fun loving spirit and deeply generous heart will be missed.

Funeral from the Quealy & Son Funeral Home 116 Adams Street, Abington Thursday December 6 at 8am followed by a funeral mass in St. Bridget Church, Abington 9am. Visitation Wednesday 3 to 7pm. Interment St. Patrick Cemetery, Rockland. Donations to Saint Bridget Church and St. Vincent DePaul Society.
