Obituary

M. Alice Walsh (Sullivan), 91, of Rockland and formerly of Quincy and Dorchester, died on Nov.1, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. Alice was the wife of the late Michael J. Walsh and loving mother of Joseph F. of Rockland, Robert J. and his wife Gail of Braintree, James L. and his wife Cathleen of South Easton, Richard J. and his wife MaryLou of Braintree, Gerard W. and his wife Christine of Hanson and Inverness, FL., Brian M. and his wife Laura of Milton and Dennis X. and his wife Kristi of Port St. Lucie FL. She was the daughter of the late William F. and Alice (Young) Sullivan, sister of Grace Dorcette (Travers) of Leesburg, FL, Katherine Fennell of Weymouth, Andrew James Sullivan of Leesburg, FL, Ann Weaver of Leesburg, FL, Virginia Roberts of New Durham, NH and Edward Sullivan of Contocook, NH and the late William F. Sullivan Jr., Sister Rita Sullivan, M.M.; Dorothy Cornelissen and Mildred Wheeler. She was the grandmother of Michael J., Robert J., Richard J., James L., Laurianne, Matthew M., Gerard W., Sean M., Corey P., Colleen E., Timothy J., Courtney A., Ryan P., and Brendan J. Walsh, and Debra M. Lavoie, Christine E. Roderick, Kimberly A. Bohnenberger, Michele A. Casey, Shannon M. Hruzd, Caitlin M. Phillips, and special grandmother to Edgar G. Herrera as well as Ben and Alex Perry.  She was the great grandmother of Nathan M. and Jared R. Lavoie; Abigail E., Meaghan R. and Brady G. Roderick; Rhiannon M. Walsh; Kayleigh E., Thomas J., James P. and Aidan M. Walsh; Hunter F. and Charlotte M. Bohnenberger; Wayne R., Daniel J., and Evan T. Casey, Michael P. and Delaney A. Walsh; Emily K. Walsh; Elijah S. Walsh; Xavier T. Walsh; and special great-grandmother to Javier G., Julius J., and Alejandra M. Herrera. She was the oldest of 11 siblings, mother of 7 sons, grandmother of 20 grandchildren, great-grandmother of 20 great-grandchildren and Aunt Alice to 58 nieces and nephews. Also known as "Big Al," she has been the center of strength and the matriarch of the family. Alice was a retired Customer Service Agent for the Boston Gas Company. In the 1960's, Alice worked full time at the family owned business, the "Walsh's Variety Store" at 205 West Squantum Street, Quincy - now known as Mullaney's Variety.  After retirement, Alice enjoyed travel with family and friends to Europe, Guatemala, and Hawaii.  Her last trip to Ireland was enjoyed with her son Joseph, sister Ginger, and cousins Tim, Bunty, & Rosemary Gilligan of London, England. Both as a child and adult, Alice enjoyed spending time with her family during the summer months on Lake Winnipesaukee.  For the past 30 years, Alice shared her love of the lake with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at the big house in Birch Haven on Paugus Bay. Funeral from the Quealy & Son Funeral Home, 116 Adams St., Abington, MA Thursday, November 8th at 10 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Bridget's Church, Abington at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Dominican Sisters' Monastery of the Mother of God, 1430 Riverdale Street, West Springfield, MA 01089-4698, Attn. Sr. Mary St. John, O.P. or the Norwell Visiting Nurses Association, 120 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA 02061.
