Catherine J. Back, 64, of Houghs Neck & Braintree, Massachusetts, passed away on September 19, 2025.

Cathy found purpose in raising her daughters, and helping those around her, humans and animals alike. She was never happier than when she was on the beach with her feet in the sand, with her dogs, or tending to her beautiful plants. She was also deeply passionate about mental health and the need for reform in the treatment of those who suffered with it.

She is survived by her daughters, Stephanie Morgenstern and Samantha Stein and their husbands, Alexander Stough and Joseph Topping, her dearest friend Dorothy Morrocco, her siblings, Heidi, Eric, Tim, and Howie Back, and her cousin, Jimmy Kirby.

Cathy's story is not one of ease, but one of striking perseverance. She struggled for many years, battling against mental illness, and ultimately she succumbed to it. With her death, her family hopes to bring light to the resources available to those that struggle like she did.

Cathy will be remembered with honesty and respect for the space she held, and the impact she had in the world. Services in her memory will be private, but those who knew her are encouraged to donate to the National Alliance on Mental Health, Massachusetts ( Donate | NAMI Massachusetts) in her memory.
