Charles F. Whitman, Jr., of Abington, passed away on April 12, 2026. He was 79 years old.
Born on June 1, 1946, Charlie was a lifelong resident of Abington and a proud member of the community he served so faithfully throughout his life.
Charlie dedicated 47 years of service to the Abington Fire Department, beginning his career while still in high school. Firefighting was a proud family tradition, as both his father and grandfather also served on the Abington force. A remarkable hard worker, Charlie was known for always holding multiple jobs at a time in order to provide for his large and beloved family.
He was also a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving with the 2nd Infantry Division overseas in Korea. Charlie was a lifelong member of Abington's Lewis V. Dorsey American Legion Post, where he held various positions over the years.
Charlie was the devoted husband of Peggy Whitman, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage. He was the loving father of April Castle and her husband Jonathan of Norwell, Julie Russell and her husband Jamie of Tennessee, Charles Whitman of Middleborough, Taren Whitman of Holbrook, Jeremy Whitman of Whitman, Sean Whitman and his fiancée Michelle of Abington, Josh Whitman of Whitman, Alex Whitman of Indiana, and Kelly Whitman of Weymouth. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Amy.
He was the dear brother of Donald Whitman of Abington. Charlie was also the cherished grandfather of Drew, Jack, Hailey, Molly, Cassie, Charlie, Shane, Hailey, Kylie, Joshie, and Jameson. He also leaves behind many loving uncles, aunts, cousins, extended family members, and friends.
Charlie enjoyed golfing and especially looked forward to his Thursday night golf league. He was an avid crossword puzzler and always appreciated receiving scratch tickets as gifts.
In recognition of his many years of dedicated service, Charlie received the Massachusetts Firefighter Service Award as well as a special citation from Abington Local 2080.
A visitation will be held at Quealy & Son Funeral Home 116 Adams Street Abington, MA on Tuesday April 21 , from 4 PM to 7 PM. A funeral home service will be Wednesday April 22 at 10 AM. Interment to follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery Abington.
