Ella P. Smith of Abington, January 18, 2011, beloved wife of Hinton Smith, sister of Alyce Gittens of Boston and the late Gilbert Pierce, and niece Mary Parkman of Louisiana. Ella grew up in Bridgewater, interested in pursuing a career in medicine; she became certified in analytical chemistry as a laboratory technician. She later attended Harvard Extension University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966. Ella met her husband, Hinton, when they were both pursuing medical careers. They lived most of their married life in Abington and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2010. Ella had a distinguished career serving as Executive Director of the Boston Evening Medical Center. Despite the heavy demands of her professional career, she always found time to volunteer in the community. At the time of her death she served as a member of the Boston Evening Clinic Foundation and the Board of Overseers of the Museum of Science and was an active member of the Harvard Extension University Alumnae Association. A funeral service will be held at the Quealy & Son Funeral Home 116 Adams Street, Abington Monday January 24 at 11:30am. Visitation Monday 11am to 11:30am. Interment Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
