Florence J. (McCarty) Lydon, age 93, of Rockland, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2026, at Southwood Nursing Home in Norwell, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Dorchester on April 29, 1933, Florence was the daughter of the late Charles J. and Sara A. McCarty. She was raised and educated in Dorchester and graduated from Dorchester High School. In her younger years, Florence was a member of Saint Ann’s Band, where she played the clarinet.
Florence worked for the MTA and later for Kelly Services. Throughout her life, she enjoyed golfing, bowling since a young age, playing BINGO, spending time at Nantasket Beach, and escaping the New England winters with trips to Naples, Florida. Above all else, Florence treasured time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Florence was a longtime parishioner of St. Bridget Church in Abington.
She was the beloved wife of the late Mark J. Lydon, with whom she shared 61 years of marriage. Florence and Mark were married on September 6, 1954.
She was the loving mother of Mark Lydon and his wife Kathy Dahlstrom, Susan Keenan and her husband James, Joseph Lydon, Teresa Kyller and her husband Michael, and Joanne Morris. Florence was the cherished grandmother, affectionately known as “Grandma,” to her 15 grandchildren, and “Grandma Flo” to her 28 great-grandchildren.
Florence was predeceased by her parents; her siblings, Kathleen Stanton and Charles McCarty; her husband, Mark; and two newborn babies.
A visitation will be held at Quealy & Son Funeral Home, 116 Adams Street, Abington, on Wednesday, September 9, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bridget Church, Abington, on Thursday, September 10, at 10:30 AM. Interment will be held at St. Patrick’s cemetery in Rockland at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Florence’s memory may be made to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society at St. Bridget Church in Abington or to Croi Health in Norwell.
