Obituary

George J. Roberts III, President of the Abington High School graduating class of 1973, passed away surrounded by family and loved ones. Born and raised in Abington, George was a cherished member of the community and a man of many passions and talents.

Upon graduating high school, he devoted many years as a volunteer call fireman for Abington, demonstrating his commitment to service and the safety of others. At just 17 years old, his adventurous spirit led him and two friends on a remarkable week-long bicycle journey to Canada and back.

A visionary entrepreneur, George founded Roberts Investment Company, which ran a successful coffee and snack vending service across New England in the late 1970s. However, his true passion lay in restoring historic homes and buildings. Notably, he restored the old Carriage and Sleigh Warehouse on Washington Street and undertook his proudest achievement: purchasing and meticulously rebuilding the Abington Depot after its destruction by fire. He transformed the site into a vibrant restaurant, breathing life back into a piece of local history.

A lifelong lover of animals, George volunteered countless hours at animal shelters and personally cared for many abandoned cats and dogs. He found immense joy in spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews, and cherished family gatherings.

In addition to his dedication to restoration and community, George enjoyed landscaping, travel, and was a licensed scuba diver who embraced the wonders of the world both above and below the surface.

George is survived by his brother Rick and wife Jodi, along with nieces Ashli, Lyndsie, and Kylie, all of Abington; sister-in-law Ellen, and nephews Eric, Alec, and Nicholas of Middleboro. He was the beloved son of the late George "Lefty" and Marjorie Roberts of Abington, and the brother of the late Kenny Roberts. He is also survived by his loving aunts Liz Holbrook of Abington, Mae Mahanna of Hanover, Ruth and husband Richard Curran of Hampstead, NH, as well as numerous cousins.

Visitation will be held at the Quealy & Son Funeral Home, 116 Adams Street, Abington on Wednesday December 18 from 5pm to 7pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday December 19 at 11 AM at the First Baptist Church, 219 Adams Street, Abington. Interment to follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Abington.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the MSPCA, honoring his love and dedication to animals
