Gilbert D.
Bristol Iii
March 25, 1940 – October 8, 2025
Gilbert D. Bristol III, 85, a longtime resident of Abington, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025, at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth.
Born on March 25, 1940, in Springfield, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Gilbert D. Bristol, Jr. and Ethel (Goss) Bristol. Gil grew up in Abington and graduated with the Class of 1958, receiving his diploma from his father, who served as Superintendent of Abington Schools for ten years.
Following his graduation, Gil attended Bryant College, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business. In 1964, he proudly joined the United States Navy, serving as a Quartermaster aboard the USS Barney.
Gil went on to have a successful career in commercial insurance. Outside of work, he enjoyed bowling, fishing, camping, and cheering on his beloved Red Sox. He treasured time spent with family—especially gatherings on Cape Cod—and in later years looked forward to weekly breakfasts with his close group of veteran friends.
A man of faith and service, Gil was a devoted member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brockton, where he served as usher and treasurer for many years and occasionally lent his voice to the choir.
He is survived by his loving wife of more than 50 years, Linda "Linn" (Laidley) Bristol of Somerville; his children, Bonni, Andrew, and Daniel; his cherished grandchildren, Alice and Quinn of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his brothers, Ralph of England and William of New Hampshire. He was predeceased by his sister, Cynthia.
A visitation will be held at Quealy & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday May 12 from 4 PM to 5 PM. Followed by a funeral home service at 5 PM. Interment at Massachusetts National Cemetery at later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gil's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
