Grace Bradford (Nash) Damon of Abington passed away on February 5, 2013, at the South Shore Healthcare Center in Rockland, MA. Grace had celebrated her 100th birthday on August 9, 2012. The daughter of Elbridge B. and Florence (Sargent) Nash, Grace was born and raised in South Weymouth. After graduating from Weymouth High School in 1929, Grace learned secretarial skills at Burdett College in Boston. On April 17, 1937, Grace married Chester Damon at her parents' home on Columbian Street, S. Weymouth. In 1940, the couple purchased a home in Abington where they raised their son and daughter. Grace remained in her home for the rest of her life enjoying her rose garden and sitting on the back porch.
After her children were both in school, Grace returned to the working world. She worked as a secretary at New England Art Publishers then at Abington High School before taking a position as secretary to the President at South Weymouth Savings Bank. She loved her job and the co-workers there. Grace retired after 20 years at the bank then traveled with her husband until he succumbed to cancer in 1979.
At the age of 60, Grace realized her life-long dream and learned to play the organ. Grace tended to be a perfectionist, so within a few years, she became quite an accomplished organist. Unfortunately, her eyesight began to fail at age 85 causing her to discontinue playing the organ. Grace was declared legally blind at age 96. Although Grace could no longer play the organ, she continued to love music. Every summer Sunday evening Grace could be seen in the front row at the Abington Summer Concerts tapping her feet to the music. Her favorite shows featured her grandson Ken on saxophone. She also enjoyed the music at the S. Shore Healthcare Center where, due to failing health, Grace spent the final days of her life.
Grace will be sadly missed especially by her family which always came first in her life. She leaves a daughter, Nancy Reid and husband Curtis of Abington and a son, Philip Damon and wife Loretta of St. Anthony, Idaho. Her grandchildren who will miss their beloved Nana are: Claire (Damon) Singer and husband Kevin of Spokane Valley, WA, Kenneth Reid and wife Elena of Assonet, MA, James Reid and wife Sandy of Plymouth, MA, and Philip Damon, Jr. of Pocatello, Idaho. She also leaves two nieces and six great-grandchildren. Grace was pre-deceased by her brother, Dwight Nash and her sister, Miriam (Nash) Hoffman.
A Service to Celebrate Grace's long life will be held on February 23, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Abington, 10 Bedford Street.
