(Smith) Doherty
August 17, 1937 – January 2, 2026
Helen "Carol" Doherty (Smith) of Abington passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 17, 1937, in Washington, D.C., to the late Dr. William Smith and Mildred Smith.
Carol was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1955. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward M. Doherty and a devoted mother and grandmother and great grandmother.
She is survived by her children: Edward M. Doherty Jr. and his wife Sandy of South Carolina; Ann Pantano and her husband Phil of Rockland, Massachusetts; Maureen Chighisola and her husband John of Florida; Bill Doherty of New York; and Bob Doherty and Augusta Johnson of Rhode Island. She is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carol was the mother-in-law of the late Wendy Doherty.
In her later years, Carol developed a deep passion for helping animals. She wrote for "Pet of the Week," helping to find loving homes for animals at the SPCA Shelter in Brockton. She also enjoyed wood burning and shared her creative talents as a vendor at many craft fairs.
Carol had a strong desire to serve others and generously volunteered her time at the Abington Food Pantry, a cause that was close to her heart.
All services will be held privately in accordance with Carol's wishes.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Abington Food Pantry / St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, 425 Plymouth Street, Abington, MA 02351.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her loving family.
