Obituary

James J. Slattery, CPCU, Insurance Executive, Corporate Board Member, Mountaineer and Long Distance Runner. James J. Slattery, CPCU, President of J.H. Slattery Insurance Agency, Inc. of Abington, MA died September 18, 2012 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a long battle with bone marrow disease.  He was 76. Mr. Slattery  is survived by four children Susan M. Slattery and husband Sean Brundige of Rockland, Catherine Slattery and husband Robert Bystrowski of Granby, CT, Sean Slattery and fiancee Eileen Marr of Sydney, Australia, and Sarah Slattery and husband Tyrone Sullivan of New York City and the late James P. Slattery, four grandchildren, Jonathan, Katie and Caroline Bystrowski and Grace Slattery.   Mr. Slattery is also survived by his wife Phyllis of Nantucket. Mr. Slattery grew up in Whitman and graduated from Archbishop Williams High School . He received a BBA degree in Finance from St. Bonaventure University.  He received his CPCU designation in 2001 and at the time was the oldest recipient in the country. He served as a trustee of Massasoit Community College and was Chairman of the Board for six years.  He also served as a trustee of Saint Bonaventure University. The son of the late Joseph H. Slattery and Catherine J. (Fitzmaurice) Slattery of Whitman, he joined the family business in1959.  He served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard at the Whitman Armory where he was Company Clerk. Mr. Slattery served as a director of the Abington Savings Bank for over twenty years and as a Director of the Abington Mutual Insurance Company for thirteen years.  He served as President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Greater Brockton.  He also was a director of the Independent Insurance Agents of Massachusetts. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Slattery spent 20 years mountain trekking.  He visited Tanzania and summated Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,340) with his son Sean.  In 1989, he completed a two week traverse of the "Haute Route" from Mont Blanc, Chamonix, France to the Matterhorn, Zermatt, Switzerland. In 2007, he visited Antarctica aboard a Russian expedition ship, the Akademic  Ioffe , allowing him the opportunity to complete his goal of visiting all seven continents. Mr. Slattery competed in over 200 road races and completed seven marathons, including Boston, New York and Chicago.  He saved the race numbers from every race and will give the collection to his long standing running partner, Denise Sylvester of Brockton. A special thanks to the doctors and staff of Massachusetts General Hospital for extraordinary care and friendship. Funeral From the Quealy & Son Funeral Home , 116 Adams St., Abington, MA Saturday September 22 at 8am followed by a funeral mass in St. Bridget Church, Abington 9am. Visitation Friday 4 to 8pm. Interment St. Patrick Cemetery, Rockland.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to James Slattery Research Fund, MA General  Hospital, Fruit St., Boston, MA 02114, or Saint Bonaventure Athletic Fund, Box G, SBU, NY 14778
