Obituary

Janis McLaughlin of Hingham, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2025, surrounded by the love she so generously gave throughout her life. Born and raised in Dorchester, Janis carried the heart of the city with her—resilient, vibrant, and full of joy.

She is survived by her sisters, Linda Walsh and her husband Jack of Weymouth, MA, and her twin sister, Julie Lavanchy of Pembroke, MA, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of friends who became family.  She was the beloved wife to the late James Kelley. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, James Kelley, parents, Alice (Creighton) and Lawrence McLaughlin, her brother, Kevin McLaughlin, and her sister, Lauren McLaughlin.

Though she never had children of her own, Janis was a proud and loving aunt to a large and fortunate group of nieces and nephews who knew her not just as "Auntie Janis," but as a second mother, a confidante, and their fiercest supporter. She celebrated their milestones, comforted them through heartaches, and filled every gathering with laughter and love.

Janis had a gift for making people feel special. Her infectious laugh, honest advice, and playful spirit lit up every room. She was the life of every party, teaching others to dance like no one was watching and to find humor even in difficult times. Her love was unconditional, her loyalty unwavering, and her joy unforgettable.

She dedicated her career to dentistry as a dental assistant, where her warmth and wit made her a favorite among coworkers and patients alike. But her greatest calling was in the relationships she nurtured. Janis was the glue that held family gatherings together—the one who remembered everyone's favorite meal and was always ready with a shoulder to lean on or a glass of wine to share.

One of her greatest joys was spending time in Maine, especially at the lake. Whether watching the sunset on the beach or relaxing by the fire, Maine was her sanctuary. She was able to return there one last time thanks to the love and devotion of her cherished friend, Patricia Foscaldo, who stood by her side throughout her illness and until the very end.

After a long illness, Janis faced her final days with courage, grace, and the same warmth she had shown others all her life. Her family is deeply grateful to the hospice staff at AccentCare–Milton, whose compassionate care brought comfort and peace to both Janis and her loved ones.

Her legacy lives on in every inside joke, every spontaneous road trip, and every moment of love she shared.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 22, at 11:00 a.m. at Quealy & Son Funeral Home, Abington, MA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Accent Hospice Fund.
