Obituary

Jean T. Hanrahan, 76, passed away peacefully on the evening of September 25, 2025, after a long and brave battle with kidney disease.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Magnussen of Carver, MA, Jennifer's husband, Mark, and her beloved granddaughters, Zoe and Maya.

Jean was born on July 31, 1949, in Dorchester, MA, the middle child of five children to Inez and Loran Hanrahan of Abington, MA. She graduated from Abington High School, Class of 1967, and went on to build a successful career in the banking and insurance industries. Over the years, she worked at several local banks and agencies across the South Shore, eventually retiring after many years of dedicated service at Goodrich Insurance in Milton, MA.

Jean was the quintessential middle child—an anchor within her family, tough as nails, with a quick and wicked sense of humor. She faced many difficult diagnoses over the years, yet never lost her fighting spirit. Hardworking and independent, she proudly owned homes in Abington and Weymouth. She and Jenny shared many adventures and vacations, including a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Paris, France. Later in life, Jean embarked on a cruise to Alaska with friends, one of her most cherished memories.

Jean loved music—especially Bob Dylan—lunching with family and friends, and fiercely competitive games of Scrabble. She was an avid watcher of foreign films, a devoted fan of butternut donuts and cold cans of Coke, and never said no to a front porch cigarette. Always quick with a joke and never afraid to "tell it like it is," she was fiercely loyal to those she loved. Above all, she treasured her siblings, her daughter and son-in-law, and especially her role as Grammy to Maya and Zoe.

Her final days were marked by a steady stream of family and friends visiting to share memories, love, and (too many) donuts. Brave, decisive, and clear-headed until the end, Jean made sure to tell everyone how much they meant to her—a final act of kindness and strength that will not soon be forgotten.

Jean was predeceased earlier this year by her younger sister, Barbara Hanrahan of New Seabury, MA. She is survived by her siblings Linda Kluz and her husband Eric of Scituate, MA; Susan Pithie of Quincy, MA; Loran Hanrahan of Quincy, MA; and sister-in-law Lisa Evans of New Seabury, MA. She also leaves behind her devoted nieces and nephews: Jason Pithie and his wife Renee of Norwell, MA; Sallyann Kluz and her husband Dan Allen of Pittsburgh, PA; Heather Wallock (née Pithie) and her husband Christopher of Thousand Oaks, CA; and Jessica Benson (née Pithie) and her husband Paul of Quincy, MA.

Jean will also be deeply missed by her cherished grandnieces and grandnephews: Griffin, Isabel, Charlotte, and Vivian Pithie; Ursula and Thea Kluz-Allen; Nate, Noah, and Mary Rose Wallock; and Russel and Harris Benson.

A Funeral Home Service will be held at Quealy & Son Funeral Home, 116 Adams Street, Abington, on Saturday, October 18, at 11:00 AM.
