John R. Herr, 89, of Rockland, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2026.
John was the beloved husband of the late Marylou (Savage) Herr and the devoted father of John Herr and his wife Monica of Rockland; Lawrence Herr and his partner Douglas Williams of Easton; Christopher Herr and his wife Crystal of Kingston, New Hampshire; and Dianne Vazquez and her husband Robert of East Bridgewater. He also leaves behind many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
At the age of 17, John enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country. Following his military service, he went on to dedicate his career to serving the City of Boston as a firefighter, retiring after many years of faithful service.
Throughout his life, John faithfully honored the men who lost their lives in the tragic Vendome fire. He carried their memory with him, honoring their sacrifice and reflecting the deep respect he held for the brotherhood of firefighters and those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
Following his retirement, John looked forward to attending the Liars Club with his fellow Boston Fire Department retirees every Wednesday, where he enjoyed good conversation and the company of friends. He also loved fishing, walking his dogs, and, most importantly, spending time with his family.
John’s life was marked by dedication to his country, service to his community, and love for his family. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life and in the friendships and family connections he treasured.
John will be deeply missed by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends. His memory will live on in the stories shared, the traditions carried forward, and the love he leaves behind.
He will be forever loved, lovingly remembered, and never forgotten.
