It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Wayne Smith, affectionately known as Wayne, who passed away peacefully on July 4, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on October 6, 1948, Wayne was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose life was defined by service, hard work, and love for his family.
Wayne shared nearly 53 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Janice (Murphy) Smith, as well as building a family rooted in love, faith, and dedication.
A proud and hardworking man, Wayne honorably served in the Army National Guard as well as a distinguished 32-year career with the Department of Correction, retiring as a Lieutenant. His commitment to serving others continued through his work as a licensed plumber from 1988 until his retirement in 2018.
Wayne was a faithful member of the Elks and the Knights of Columbus, where he enjoyed fellowship and giving back to his community.
Above all else, family was the center of Wayne’s life. He was the loving father of Robin Coleman and her husband, Joseph Coleman, of Carver, and Ryan Smith and his wife, Amy Smith, of Hanson. His greatest joy was being “Grandpa” to his four beloved grandchildren, Teagan, Maeve, Connor, and Kayleigh, whom he loved beyond measure and was incredibly proud of.
Wayne was predeceased by his parents, John Warren Smith and Loraine Elizabeth Smith. He is survived by his loving sister, Jane Sarson of North Conway, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Wayne will be remembered for his unwavering work ethic, quiet strength, kindness, and selfless devotion to his family. Whether serving his country, his community, or those he loved most, he led by example with integrity and humility. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
