Joseph Gerard Landry Sr. of Abington, August 7, age 87, loving husband of the late Helen W. (Szumski) Landry; Loving father of Dennis James Landry and wife Gale of TN, Douglas Robert Landry of Boston, Duane Arthur Landry and wife Joan of Rockland, Elsie Jean Landry of Hull, Joseph Gerard Landry Jr. and Tanya Richardi of Abington, and William J. Desjardin and wife Paula of AZ; Loving brother of Arthur Landry of Cape Cod, Theresa Murphy of Lexington, and the late Barbara and Dorothy. Also, survived by 7 grandchildren. Born November 27th,1922 in Watertown Massachusetts to Arthur and Melanie (LaBlanc) Landry . Graduated Cambridge-Rindge and Technical School and during WWII he joined the U.S. Army Air Corp. Serving as a Boeing B-29 crewman and engineering specialist assigned to the 20th Army Air Corp 315th Bomb Group 41st Squadron based on Guam Island, North Field. After Honorable Discharge in 1946 he attended Tufts University Engineering College graduating with Honors specializing in Electrical Engineering. During his 10 years with General Electric in Lynn and Portsmouth N.H, as project engineer for the G.E. he created the commercial electric meter found on many homes today. A passionate engineer and entrepreneur, and holder of numerous US Patents, he was the chief founder of Astra Corporation. He invented a Metering Transformer that remains an industry standard. Over more than 40 years Astra operations were in South Boston, Quincy, and New Bedford employing approximately 75 personal in the manufacture of electrical metering transformers and other electrical devices. Astra now is part of Durham Industries. An avid aviator he flew and owned many aircraft. The 1946 Ercoupe was his favorite and he flew until he was 87 years old. Also an avid mariner he owned several boats and survived the 2008 explosion of his beloved Yankee Marine Trawler the "Natalie" while in New Bedford harbor. He remained at home and due to the loving care and attention given by his son Joseph Jr and Tanya Richardi he was able to remain at home during his covalence. He died peacefully at home surrounded by many of loved ones. Funeral from the Quealy & Son Funeral Home 116 Adams Street, Abington Wednesday August 11 at 8am followed by a funeral mass in St. Bridget Church, Abington 9am. Visitation Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm. Interment St. Patrick Cemetery, Rockland.
