Manuel G. Souza, III, of Whitman, died on February 25, 2011 following a period of declining health. He was born on July 14, 1941 in New Bedford, where he was raised and educated, the son of the late Manuel G., Jr. and Blanche (Souza) Souza.  Mr. Souza served in the Massachusetts National Guard for 18 years.  He worked for Brinks Security and Shah Construction.  An avid sled dog racer, Mr. Souza won many trophies. Devoted husband Ellen J. (Laaperi).  Father of Zachary Souza of Whitman, Patrick and his wife, Cheryl Souza of Fairhaven, Michelle and her husband, Tim Lee of Mashpee. Brother of Rita Varrao of New Bedford, Joseph Souza of South Dartmouth, Richard Souza of Forestdale, Robert Souza of California, Patricia Tavares of New Bedford and the late Blanche Machado and MaryAnne Souza.  Also survived by 4 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, many nieces and nephews. Funeral services on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock in the Quealy & Son Funeral Home, 116 Adams Street, Abington. Visitation Tuesday, 4-8 p.m. Following cremation, burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
