Obituary

Margaret Ann Payne Mullen, 60, of Hanson, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, at South Shore Hospital. She was surrounded by the love of her husband, her daughter Kim, and her brother-in-law, following a courageous and determined battle with cancer.

Born at the Chelsea Naval Hospital to Claire Payne and the late William F. Payne, Margaret was raised in Rockland. It was there that she built a foundation of lifelong faith and community spirit, graduating from Holy Family Catholic School and Rockland High School, Class of 1983. She went on to complete the executive secretarial program at Katharine Gibbs, embarking on a professional career marked by meticulous care and integrity.

Margaret spent many years as a mortgage underwriter for Bank East and Rockland Trust. However, her true calling was service to others. She was a dedicated CCD teacher, a supportive substitute teacher, and a cornerstone of local scouting. A recipient of the Girl Scout First Class Award, she shared her passion for the outdoors and leadership as a longtime counselor at Camp Alice Carlton in Whitman.

A woman of many creative talents, Margaret had a generous heart and gifted hands. Whether she was lost in a book, crocheting and knitting keepsakes for friends, or showcasing her skills in baking and cake decorating, she poured love into everything she created. Proud of her family's military heritage, she was also a lifetime member of the VFW and the Fleet Reserve.

Margaret's greatest legacy is the family she nurtured. She was the devoted wife of David Mullen, with whom she shared 37 beautiful years of marriage and a home in Hanson for over three decades. She was the loving mother of Kimberly Mullen and Amanda Ebbs. Above all, she was the heart of her granddaughters' lives; as "Nana," she and David raised Jocelyn and Willow Ebbs from infancy with boundless devotion.

In addition to her husband and daughters, she is survived by her mother, Claire Payne; her siblings, Catherine Soper, David Payne, Dennis Payne, and Steven Payne; and a large, loving circle of nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will forever miss her caring nature and steadfast presence
