Patricia A.
Murray
August 27, 1937 – July 27, 2024
Patricia Ann Murray of Plymouth Massachusetts passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday July 27, 2024, at the Newfield House in Plymouth. She was the loving wife to the late Robert Edward Murray and devoted mother to eight children.
She was born on August 27th, 1937, in Arlington MA and grew up in Lexington MA with her parents the late Phyllis Gillon, stepfather John Gillon and her brother Jack Russell. As Jack's big sister, Pat made it her priority to keep Jack on the right path and ensured he received his first communion and confirmation in the Catholic church. Patricia's vibrant personality was always on display in her years at Lexington High while playing field hockey, basketball, participating as a majorette in the high school band and serving as class secretary, capturing the position with such witty slogans as "quick stat vote for Pat" and "quick hustle vote for Russell". She had a quiet understated humor and eventually met her match in her eternal best friend and husband Bob. While it took some time for her to look past his "class clown" antics she eventually relented, and they never looked back. Patricia went on to receive her associate degree at Fischer Junior College before marrying Bob in 1960 and starting a family.
Pat was one of the most passionate loyal Boston sports fans you'd ever meet. She purchased her own Bruins season tickets in the 1960's and then went on to buy Patriots season tickets with Bob in the 70's; tickets that remain in the family to this day. In what would become a common theme she could often be seen pacing the halls or covering her eyes in some of the most stressful Patriots games, and even attended numerous Patriots Super Bowls. Her fanaticism never dulled with age as she made it a priority to know the schedule, station and time of every Bruins, Celtics, Patriots and Red Sox game. Her children were always on call in case of a sports emergency; in one instance asking her daughter in law (a Spanish teacher) to interpret the audio of a Patriots game to her over the phone when she couldn't change the audio setting back to English.
Holidays and family events were truly the most cherished of times for Pat. Nothing was more important to her than family and friends, which was on full display every December as she prepared to host the holidays with Anne Murray consistently playing in the background. She also annually embraced hosting eighty-five or more family members to celebrate the 4th of July (often referred to as the Murray family reunion) as relatives throughout the country descended upon Abington. Although chaotic at times she wouldn't have had it any other way.
One would imagine being an involved mother to eight children would leave little time for anything else, but Patricia's generous and compassionate nature compelled her to seek out opportunities to volunteer and contribute to the betterment of the world. While there are too many of these examples to mention, from working regularly in soup kitchens, volunteering at the church and sponsoring two children from impoverished countries was something she took particular pride in. In the same vein one could see her caring selfless spirit in her ability to make every person she encountered feel cared for and valued through her genuine eagerness to forge relationships with others.
Patricia is survived by her younger brother Jack Russell, children Shawn Murray and wife Paula, Brian Murray and wife Karen, Maura and her husband Vincent ViVenzio, Karen and her husband Mark Bostrup, Dennis Murray and wife Karen, Mark Murray and wife Heidi, Noreen and her husband Brendan Toole, Christopher Murray and his wife Christina. She also leavesbehind her fifteen adoring grandchildren to whom she was Grammie- Evan (31), Ryan (30), Kristen (29), Connor (29), Nicole (28), Christian (27), Shane (26), Anthony (24) ,Peyton (24), Blake (23), Matthew (22), Robbie (16), Aidan (12), Collin (11) and Isla (9) as well as many nieces and nephews.
