Paul F.
Mccarty
June 22, 1942 – May 16, 2025
Paul F. McCarty, of Weymouth, passed away unexpectedly at South Shore Hospital on Friday, May 16, 2025, at the age of 82. Paul was the beloved husband of Elaine (Tobin) McCarty. He was a devoted father to his son, Brian McCarty of Quincy, MA, and the late Coleen Dozier. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Jarrett Dozier, of Weymouth, MA. Paul was a loving and proud grandfather to Sean Dozier, Gavin Dozier, and Owen Dozier, all of Weymouth, MA.
Born on Jun. 22, 1942, he was the eldest of the seven children of Leo J. and Mary (Burke) McCarty of Dorchester, MA. Predeceased by his parents, his sister Nancy and her husband Peter DiGiacomo, and his brothers Leo D. McCarty and John McCarty, he is survived by his sister Jane and her husband James Markey of Quincy, MA, his sister Marian Reid of Plymouth, MA, his sister Kathleen and her husband Michael Joyce of Milton, MA, his sister-in-law Nancy McCarty of Mendon, MA, his sister-in-law Helen and her husband John Pace of Hendersonville, TN, and his sister-in-law Rita Tobin. He was also an uncle to 21 nieces and nephews, and a cousin or friend to many others.
Paul was a proud 1959 graduate of Boston's Cathedral High School, and he began a lifelong career of public service when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Texas and New York from 1960 to 1964. After returning to Boston, and to his incredible fortune, he met the former Elaine Tobin, also of Dorchester, MA, and they were married on Jan. 18, 1969.
Shortly thereafter, Paul began his career with the U.S. Customs Service, where he would remain for the next 29 years. His service took him and his family to stations in Toronto, Canada and Buffalo, New York, but he was able to return to Boston in 1981, when his family settled in Braintree, MA. He was a proud member and officer of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) throughout his Customs career and, while working at Logan Airport in 1983, received a commendation for detaining a suspected terrorist.
Paul was a passionate Boston sports fan. He was a Red Sox lifer, and had just barely gotten back to his seats when Bobby Orr scored "The Goal" to win the Stanley Cup in overtime on Mother's Day in 1970. He was a gifted baseball player in high school and regularly played softball with his co-workers and friends. He also enjoyed golf and playing horseshoes. He was a voracious reader, a very proud Democrat.
Most importantly, Paul was an unwavering advocate for his family in their times of need. When his daughter fell ill, he was there to support her mother and her husband, and was a consistent presence in his grandchildrens' lives at every step, then and thereafter. And from the moment Elaine fell ill, he was relentlessly at her bedside, ensuring she knew everyday that she was loved.
