Obituary

Richard "Dick" Merrill passed away peacefully at South Shore Hospital on November 5, 2025. He was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, on October 26, 1932.

A 1950 graduate of Abington High School, Dick proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a cook.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alton and Clarice (Crossman) Merrill, and his sister, Anne (Merrill) Flaxman. He is survived by his nieces and nephews: David Flaxman and his wife Marion, Jennifer Lividini and her husband Joe, Paul Flaxman and his wife Jennifer, and Rachael Flaxman and her husband Todd Brydson, as well as many great-nieces and nephews.

Dick was an avid train enthusiast and a lifelong birdwatcher, often spending hours identifying the many species that visited his yard. He also loved animals, especially his beloved cat, "Diesel."

He was a proud and long-serving member of both the Freemasons and the Grange. Dick was a Mason for 69 years, beginning with John Cutler Lodge in Abington, later holding primary membership at Wampatuck Lodge. He was also a dedicated Grange member for over 40 years, active in the Abington, Weymouth, and South Middleboro Chapters. Additionally, Dick was a member of the Abington Senior Center, where he enjoyed the fellowship of many friends.

Known for his mischievous sense of humor, Dick brought laughter to every family gathering—especially during childhood visits to "Nana" and "Grandpa." On summer days at Nantasket Beach, he delighted in burying the kids in the sand until everyone was laughing. Those joyful moments, along with days spent at Duck Pond in North Abington and time shared with the Clawson family, remain deeply cherished memories.

Visitation will be held at Quealy & Son Funeral Home, 116 Adams Street, Abington, on Wednesday, November 12, from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM, followed by a Funeral Service at 1:30 PM. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Abington.
