Obituary

Dr. Robert E. Murray, 85, of Plymouth, Massachusetts passed away surrounded by family, on Monday, Oct 10, 2022 at Newfield House. He was the loving and devoted husband of Patricia Ann (Russell) Murray for over 62 years.

Robert was born on June 24, 1937 in Lexington MA. He was the son of the late John and Grace (Driscoll) Murray and he was the youngest of four children. Robert (Bob) attended Lexington High School where he excelled in academics as well as track, football and hockey. He met and courted Patricia (Pat) at Lexington High and, after a bit of persistence on his part, they fell in love and were married on August 20, 1960. Before their marriage Bob attended Tufts University - School of Dental Medicine, where he graduated one year early with honors. Bob also served as an officer in the US Navy in the early 1960's aboard the USS Fulton while Pat lived on the naval base in Groton, CT with their three oldest children. They later moved to Abington, MA where he opened up his own dental practice and he and Pat went on to have five more children. They had five boys and three girls in total.

Bob was passionate about New England sports, hockey in particular, and was an avid Boston Bruins fan. In addition to his dental practice, Bob was part owner of the Rockland Ice Rink for many years. When there he could be heard yelling from the sidelines while watching and coaching his five sons. Bob was well known by all who entered the rink due to his boisterous nature and also for playing Danny Boy after the National Anthem before each game he coached. Many of his players lovingly called him Doc. Bob passed on his love of athletics to his children who were involved in numerous sports and activities. He never missed a home game if possible, often closing his office for a bit so he could run out and catch part of a game or match. On Wednesdays and Sundays you could often catch him at the Halifax Country Club perfecting his golf game.

Bob was a resident of Abington for over 30 years. There he resided with Pat and their eight children and served as the town's dentist. Doc Murray was known by most everyone in town. Bob and Pat had an abundance of friends and loved to entertain in their home on Russell Lane. Bob had a great love of music and he would often sit at the piano and play surrounded by friends and loved ones as everyone sang along. He and Pat loved to dance and their children enjoyed watching them practicing the latest dance moves in the family living room, most memorably their disco moves. They also loved to travel, often with groups of their closest friends. Their trip to Ireland was amongst their favorites as Bob was very proud of his Irish heritage which was widely known by all those who knew him. They also hosted countless family reunions and holidays in their Abington home before moving to Kingston in 1998, soon after his retirement.. Bob lived in Kingston with Pat for many years spending winters in Titusville, FL, before moving to Plymouth in 2019.

Above all Bob's love of family was unsurpassed. He instilled the importance of family into each of his children as well as his grandchildren. He was the center of every family event, whether donning a Santa hat while each of his grandchildren (no matter how old) sat on his lap as he handed out the christmas presents, or professing his undying love for Pat - setting an incredible example for all of his family and showing them that this kind of love was not only found in the movies.

Bob is predeceased by his parents John and Grace Murray, his brothers Jack and Eugene Murray and his sister Patricia Ferry. He is survived by his loving wife Patricia A. Murray, his son's Shawn Murray and wife Paula of Sandwich, MA, Brian and his wife Karen of Bridgewater, MA, Dennis Murray and his wife Karen of Whitman, MA, Mark Murray and his wife Heidi of Bedford, NH, Christopher Murray and his wife Christina of Bridgewater, MA and his daughters Maura and her husband Vincent ViVenzio of Mashpee, MA, Karen and her husband Mark Bostrup of Bedford NH and Noreen and her husband Brendan Toole of Duxbury, MA. He also leaves behind his 15 adoring grandchildren to whom he was Pop - Evan (29), Ryan (28), Kristen (28) Connor (27), Nicole (26) Christian (25), Shane (24) Anthony (22), Peyton (22), Blake (21), Matthew (20), Robbie (14), Aidan (11) Collin (9) and Isla (8), as well as many nieces and nephews.
