Roberta O'Neill, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, of East Bridgewater, MA, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2024, at the Pat Roche Hospice House. Born on September 3, 1940, she was the cherished daughter of the late Victor and Amanda Raymond (Lafranchise).
Roberta was the proud mother to her grandson Jim O'Neill and his wife Sara of Hingham, MA, and grandmother to Kim O'Neill of California. She was also the loving great-grandmother of Aerin and George O'Neill of Hingham, MA, and Mira Girard of New York. In addition, she is survived by her twin brother Robert of Arizona, as well as several nieces and nephews across the country.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, George M. O'Neill of Abington, whom she married on December 15, 1969, her sister Lorraine O'Sullivan of California, her brother Edmond Raymond of Weymouth, and her granddaughter Diane M. O'Neill of New York City.
Roberta was a proud graduate of Weymouth High School and went on to earn a certificate in X-Ray Technology from Northeastern, followed by further education at South Shore Hospital. She dedicated nearly 50 years of her life to the medical field, primarily working in the Goddard/Good Samaritan Medical System in Brockton, MA, before retiring in 2009.
Roberta's life was marked by her fierce independence and resilience. Born at home in Weymouth as a surprise twin, she moved to Abington in 1977, where she raised her family. Known for her commitment to family, she took in her grandson Jim as a teenager, providing him with the love and guidance he needed. Her advocacy and independence for herself during her six-year battle with cancer inspired all who knew her.
An avid gardener, Roberta nurtured beautiful gardens that often garnered the admiration of garden clubs and tours. She was also a passionate golfer, competing in women's leagues at Rockland and Ridder Golf Courses well into her early 80s. Until just weeks before her passing, she enjoyed playing Mahjong with her dear friends Pat, Maureen, Marna, and Irene.
Roberta O'Neill will be remembered for her strength, independence, and unwavering commitment to her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of dedication and independence that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Visitation will be held at the Quealy & Son Funeral Home, 116 Adams Street, Abington on Friday September 27 from 4pm to 7pm. A funeral mass will be held Saturday in Holy Ghost Church, Whitman at 9am. Interment Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Abington.
