William
Alger
November 5, 1951 – October 28, 2024
William Howard Alger passed away at his home surrounded by family on October 28th, 2024 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. William was born in Middleborough Massachusetts and was the son of the late Robert Ballantine Alger and his wife Mildred Barclay of West Bridgewater and Whitman Ma. William was the youngest child and was preceded in passing by his elder siblings Robert, Donald, Richard and Joanne.
From a young age, William demonstrated his commitment to service and country by leaving high school to join the Navy, bravely serving during the Vietnam War. The war left a deep mark on his life and was with him all of his days. After his honorable service, William returned to civilian life taking the lessons of war with him, which fostered a profound sense of duty and resilience, qualities that he carried into the trades as a painter, construction worker, and metal worker.
In his youth William, or "Wild Bill" enjoyed motorcycle rallies. These events reflected his free spirit, love for the open road, and camaraderie. He was never afraid to speak his mind or think for himself. He had a colorful sense of humor that got him through tough times and left those around him with a smile. This gift for making people laugh was one of his most endearing qualities. These qualities he passed down to each of his children.
William's spiritual journey was a deeply personal one. After a lifelong wrestle with faith, amid life's inevitable battles, William found solace and strength in developing a sincere and heartfelt relationship with God. This journey of faith provided him a sense of peace after a lifetime of grappling with loss. He left behind several Bibles and written personal reflections of faith as parting words for his children. They serve as a testament to the faith and wisdom he found in his final years.
William's memory will be cherished by his partner of 35 years, Donna Sharp who shared with him all of life's many adventures. Together they shared in raising three children, Anya and her husband Philippe of California, Amanda of Canton, MA, and Joshua and his wife Kate of East Bridgewater MA. His legacy is carried on in his grandchildren, Faith, Oliver, Scarlet, and Saige. His family carries forward William's enduring qualities of humor, wisdom, and faith.
We bid farewell to a man whose life, though marked by challenges, was also filled with resilience, humor, love and ultimately faith. His journey reminds us that even amidst challenges, one can find purpose and peace. His family has chosen to honor his personal wishes and hold a private funeral service. Let us honor him by remembering the moments we shared with him and holding onto the lessons of his life . Friends and family are encouraged to remember his laughter and an insight he left in his parting reflections, "God has a purpose for your pain, a reason for your struggle, and a gift for your faithfulness. Don't give up."
William's family would like to thank the Pine Street Inn of Boston for their loving service and friendship to him. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Pine Street Inn in William's honor.
