William T. "Bill" Byrne of Abington, died peacefully January 20, 2011 in the Harbor House, Hingham at the age of 98.
He was born in Duxbury, son of the late William J. and Ellen L. (Pitkethly) Byrne. A retired sheet metal worker, he was a resident of Abington for 44 years.
A devoted family man, he loved reading his daily Boston Globe and Enterprise. As a member of Sheet Metal Worker's Local 17 for more than 70 years, he was a participant in the construction of the famous Citgo sign in Kenmore Square. He was proud of his Irish heritage and was a lifelong Democrat.
He was the loving husband of almost 67 years to the late Myrtle R. (Dalton) Byrne. He is survived by his cherished children, Robert P. Byrne and his wife Gwen of Dorchester, Kathleen M. Godbout and her husband Lee of N. Weymouth, Ellen L. Delany and her husband Phil of Abington. He was also the father of the late William "Tommy" Byrne Jr.; grandfather of Jean Messer, Rick and Rob Byrne, Kevin, Keith, and Wayne Godbout, Andrew Chiocca, Mike and Steve Delany; great-grandfather of nine; great great-grandfather of 16; loving brother of the late Edith LeBlanc and Margaret Trottier. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Quealy & Son Funeral Home 116 Adams Street, Abington Tuesday January 25 at 8am, followed by a funeral mass in St. Bridget Church, Abington 9am. Visitation Monday 4 to 8pm. Interment Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Abington.
