A proud Vietnam war Veteran and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at West Roxbury VA, surrounded by family on January 14, 2026, at the age of 80.
Born on November 28, 1945, in Brockton, MA. Bill answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the USMC during the Vietnam War. He served honorably from 1965 to 1969, including time stationed in Vietnam, where he carried out his duties with courage, discipline, and unwavering commitment to his fellow service members.
His service was a source of lifelong pride, and he was honored with a Bronze Star, National defense medal, presidential unit citation, navy unit commendation ribbon, good conduct medal, combat action ribbon, Vietnam service medal with silver and bronze star, republic of Vietnam meritorious unit station, gallantry cross medal color with palm, republic of Vietnam meritorious unit citation, civil actions medal,1st class color with palm, Vietnamese campaign medal.
Following his military service, McDonald returned home and built a life defined by hard work, integrity, and devotion to family. He was known for his kindness, strong work ethic, and sense of humor. He enjoyed The NE Patriots, Boston Red Sox and he never hesitated to help those in need.
McDonald is survived by his wife Marjorie of Rockland, MA, daughter Kathleen Foley (Mike) of Laconia NH, son William McDonald (Roberto V) of Ft Lauderdale Fl, son Thomas McDonald of Belmont NH, daughter Leslee Smith (Brian) of Rockland MA son Danny Kelley of Rockland MA. brother Charlie McDonald (Anne) of Rockland, MA.
Grand children and several great grandchildren , nieces and nephews and was preceded in death by daughter Marleen Layne, sister Darlene Jones and grandchildren Wayne and Joey.
Bill will be remembered as a man who served his country with honor and lived his life with dignity. His legacy of service and love will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
Visitation will be held at the Quealy & Son Funeral Home, 116 Adams Street, Abington on Tuesday, January 20, from 4pm to 7pm. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, January 21 at 9am in Holy Family Church, Rockland. Interment will be in the veterans section of Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Abington. After the burial at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, the McDonald family would like to invite everyone back to the American Legion Post #112 at 1027 Washington Street, Abington.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to St Jude Children's Hospital.
