William M. "Billy V" Vegnani of Abington, died March 7 after a lengthy courageous battle with cancer, age 73, Loving father of Maria Hughes and husband Doug of Dorchester, Mark Vegnani  and wife Maureen of Norton, Steven Vegnani of Dorchester, Gregg Vegnani of Dorchester, and Susan Vegnani of Milton; Loving grandfather of Nicholas, Lily, Meghan, Jacob, and Mackenzie; Loving brother of Rita Dudley of Fla.,  Anne Vegnani of Abington, and the late Mary Jo Murphy, Vincent, Lawrence, and Jay Vegnani; Also, survived by brother-in-law Edward Murphy, special friend Peggy Brewer, several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.

Billy graduated from Milton High School class of 1960 and entered the Navy from 1960 to 1964 with deployments to the Far East and Vietnam.  He worked 10 years as operations and cargo supervisor in the port of Boston and was a former member of Teamsters Local 829. Longtime member and past commander of Abington American Legion Post 112, member of Abington VFW Post 5737 and Abington Vietnam Era Post 2. He also served as a member and chairman of the Town of Abington Board of Trustees of Veterans' Memorial.

Billy will be remembered most for his 20 years as voluntary caretaker at Mt. Vernon Cemetery Veterans Lot.  In October of 2014 Billy was recognized as "Abington's Best" by the board of selectman for his dedication, hard work, and commitment to Abington's Veterans.

Funeral from the Quealy & Son Funeral Home 116 Adams Street, Abington Friday March 11 at 8am followed by a funeral mass in St. Bridget Church, Abington 9am. Visitation Thursday 4 to 8pm. Interment will be at a later date in Mt Vernon Cemetery Veterans Lot. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to; Old Colony Hospice, 1 Credit Union Way, Randolph, MA 02368.
