Dorothy Helen McDonough passed away peacefully on September 4, 2023, at the age of 87 in Hingham, Massachusetts after a long battle with dementia. She was born on March 30, 1936, in Quincy, Massachusetts, to the late Faustino and Teresa Del Longo. Dorothy, a dedicated nurse for over 50 years, touched the lives of countless patients with her compassionate care.
Dorothy’s journey in nursing began at Boston City Hospital, where she nurtured her passion for helping others. After becoming a Registered Nurse, she relocated with her family to Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Dorothy’s career flourished at Jordan Hospital (now the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital -Plymouth), where she served in various nursing roles until her retirement. Her dedication to her profession was evident as she worked the late shift for years, earning additional money for her family. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dorothy had a vibrant personality. Known for her quick wit and infectious sense of humor, she delighted in sharing jokes and captivating stories. Dorothy found joy in reading mysteries, watching classic movies, solving crossword puzzles, and indulging in celebrity trivia. She cherished her time spent at Cape Cod, enjoying the beauty of the beach and the tranquility it brought.
Dorothy leaves behind her loving daughter, Elizabeth (McDonough) Hashimura, and her husband, Masayuki, along with their children, Ronan and Euen. She also leaves her son, Matthew McDonough, and his children, William and Benjamin. Dorothy was a caring aunt to many nieces and nephews and a generous friend to many.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James P. McDonough, and was the youngest of ten siblings, all of whom she has now joined in eternal rest. Her family would like to express their gratitude to the compassionate staff at Harbor House and Allerton House for the sensitive care she received during her battle with dementia.
Dorothy’s life will be celebrated in a memorial service to be held at a later date.
