Dorothy "Dot" Somers Obituary

Dorothy “Dot” G. (MacLeod) Somers passed away peacefully at her home in Carver, MA on July 13 th at the age of 88. She is survived by her devoted husband Richard J. Somers; together they spent 72 cherished years. Theirs is a love story for the ages, one that may not even be rivaled by a best-selling novel. Together they raised 9 children: Richard L. Somers and his wife Brenda of Rockland, Deborah McCullough and her husband Joseph of Florida, Hope Somerslee and her wife Sandra of Holbook, Pamela Szeto and her husband Wong of Carver, Karen Grenier and her husband Victor of New Hampshire, Robin Lockhart and her late husband Scott of East Bridgewater, Holly Burke and her husband Michael of Holbrook, Janette Somers and her fiancé Shawn Ruprecht of Wareham and the late Matthew Somers. Dot is also survived by her 19 adoring grandchildren and her 50 great grandchildren, a legacy indeed.

Dot is the daughter of the late Pearl (MacLeod) and Louis Bowman. She was raised in Jamaica Plain, MA with her six siblings, Elsie, Peggy, Bob, Bowie, Barbara, and Joseph. She recalled her childhood as a very happy one, where she never wanted for anything and was adored by her grandfather. She first met her lifelong love Buddy on the front porch of her Jamaica Plain home at the age of 15. He asked her to go for a soda and the rest is history. They married in 1952 and later moved to the suburbs to raise their children, first to Holbrook and later to East Bridgewater. Dot was a loving mother and homemaker for all of her children and grandchildren. She loved spending time with her family and sharing laughter and love. She enjoyed bingo with friends, crocheting and artwork. Virtually every member of the Somers family has a Nana Afghan somewhere in their homes. She will be remembered as a woman who was always kind to everyone and who loved each child and grandchild deeply. Her deepest love of all though was for her husband Buddy. He took care of her until her final moments and never once left her side.

Visitation will be held at the Quealy & Son Funeral Home 116 Adams Street, Abington on Sunday, July 17th from 3 to 6 PM. A funeral service will be held at the Funeral Home on Monday at 10:00 AM followed by a burial at Blue Hills Cemetery in Braintree.
