Obituary

Henry, best known as Bud, was born 09/18/1922 to Corinne Thayer Ratcliffe and Henry James Welsh in Quincy, Ma. He grew up on Sharon Road, Atlantic, Ma with his sister, Adrienne, and cat Droopy.

He graduated from North Quincy High School class of 1940, and entered the Army in 1942 as a tin/coppersmith and Sheet Metal Worker. He ended service on the Burma Trail in 1945.
Bud returned to apprentice at Bethlehem Steel Company and marry Eleanor Doris Sjoquist in 1948. They lived on Dorchester Street in Squantum, Ma. where they had two daughters, Bonnie L Welsh Jefferson and Diana F Welsh. The family moved to Summit Road in Abington, Ma in 1955, where Bud remained until his death on 06/29/23. A neighborhood that was a true community; the Smith’s, Conover’s, Wilson’s, Wicklund’s.

Widowed in 1965, he raised his daughters, returned to college and eventually taught mathematics at the Vocational High School, and reignited his passion for
sailing.

Bud learned to sail crewing for Harry Carleton and Charlie Watkins in Quincy Bay. Bud and his father, Henry, built his first boats in the basement on Sharon Road; a snowbird and a hustler (Bomber #45). They had to remove a portion of the cellar wall to extricate them (all in the plans, as the story goes!). He went on to build/own 8 hustler class boats in total. He was a junior member of the Wollaston Yacht Club.

In the 1960’s, Bud, Harry, Carl Wicklund, Paul Rugg, Dick Berger, Bruce Wainwright, Ronnie Pletsch, John Healy, Bill Bell, Mary Norton, Dick McCabe, George Way, Ed Gallagher and others, prompted a renaissance of the hustler class. They build almost 20 fiberglass hustler hulls to spark competition.

Remarrying in 1971, to Kathryn S. McPhee, meeting Kitty when he returned to work at General Dynamics in East Boston. Kitty was his companion, reliable crew, and good sport.
Bud maintained his lifelong memberships in the Delta Lodge; Grand Lodge of Free Masons, the South Shore Viking Club and Stencil Lodge #92, Massachusetts Bay Hustler Association, and the Squantum Yacht Club.

Most remembered for his quiet generosity and dry humor.

A graveside service will be held Monday July 10, 2023 in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Abignton at 12pm.
