Donald Smith Obituary

Donald George Mott Smith of Abington went home to be with our Lord on December 16, 2018.

Donald was born on June 29, 1943 to Hugh and Bessie Smith of Quincy Massachusetts.  He left high school as a teenager soon after his father passed and went to work in flooring with his uncle, Burt Keith, to support his family.  He went on to attain his GED and completed some college level courses before finding his place as the caretaker for first the Glad Tidings Church and then the Quincy Point Congregational Church, of which he was also a Deacon.  Donald was a very religious man who felt like he had found his calling in doing the Lord’s work.

He met Robert (Bob) Brennan at age 16, and they remained lifelong friends. He met the love of his life, Janet Marie Shea of Dorchester, in January of 1979.  They were married on June 24th of that same year, and Bob was his best man at his wedding.

He was introduced to the Drum and Bugle Corp at a young age, and his love for it lasted throughout his life.  He brought his family to many performances of the DCI Drum Corps International shows.  Along with this he was greatly interested in all things California related and spent many vacations exploring the state.

Donald loved his country.  He was proud of his father’s service with the United States Army and was instrumental in the installation and dedication of the flagpole at the Quincy Point Congregational Church honoring the “Sacrifice and Service” of our Veterans.

In his afterlife Donald will be reunited with his parents Hugh and Bessie Smith, and his many Aunts and Uncles.

Surviving him are his wife of 38 years, Janet, his daughter Cherylann Lee Smith and her husband Kyle Henry Iwanicki, Granddog Zaila Diamond, best friend Robert Brennan and his girlfriend Luann Fiorillo, his sister-in-law and her husband Lorraine Frances and William Alexander Innes, his nieces Cassandra Michelle Innes and Stacey Lorraine Athanassiou, her husband George Karl Athanasion, and great nieces Paige Innes and Taylor Nicole Athanasiou, as well as many cousins.
