David Berkley Obituary

David R. Berkley

David Berkley passed away peacefully at his home in Hingham, MA on Oct. 15th at age 73. You would not have wanted him to be your dietician (favorite food Taylor Pork Roll and an occasional bourbon on the rocks) but you could never find a more supportive friend or brother.  To be fair, he also relished Lancaster County sweet corn and his sister’s peach pies.

From Hinkletown to Hingham with a few stops along the way.  Ephrata High School graduate, Vietnam vet, successful fullfillment entrepreneur, winner of golf events with his friend Tom Griswold, & tennis player whose winnings consisted of a case of Heineken. Happiest vacationing and hosting family at the Jersey shore where he ended days listening to his brother and sister-in-law singing and playing guitars and began days by watching the sunrise.

Survived by his treasured extended MA family - Margaret Adams - Marshfield, MA and her daughter Kelly Adams (and Kelly’s son Matt Adams) - Hingham, MA; Margaret’s son Kris and Joann Adams and their daughters/sons Kris Jr., Brielle, Owen, & Charlotte - Rockland, MA; Derek Reese and Sarah Reese-Duxbury and their daughters Lotte and Pippa - Hingham, MA; and the neurotic family dog Rosie.  Also, Steve (brother) and Joan Berkley of Landisville; Betsy Teschner (sister) and Dick Minnich of Lititz; Mark Berkley (brother) and Mary Gibbons of Oakland, CA; Colin Martin (brother) and Susan Witmer of Millersville, PA; and nephews Matthew Berkley, Andrew Berkley, and niece Greyson Berkley.

He was a presence - larger than life.  Book reader. Dog walker.  A good-natured bear.  Always drove grey Cadillacs with Rosie riding in the back like a canine sultan.  Often made pronouncements such as “You people need to stop competing in hatchet-throwing tournaments and clean the garage”.  A task that was finally completed under his able supervision.  Comfort was his fashion goal as evidenced by necks cut off his tee shirts and a vee cut into the top of each shirt.

Family and friends could always count on David for limitless generosity and to be there for them. Those in his orbit were fortunate.  To find the words to say how much he will be missed - not possible.

As David might have said in one of his brief emails: “Carry on. EOM”
