David Wilmot Obituary

David Wilmot, 69 yrs old of Abington, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2020 surrounded by his family after a 22-year battle with multiple sclerosis.

He was born to parents Donald Wilmot and Earline (Gaw) Wilmot on February 15, 1951 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  He graduated from Reading Memorial High School in 1969, though David would always say hitch-hiking to the Woodstock Music Festival was the most instructive and proud experience of that summer.

He married Laura Wilmot, the love of his life, in 1977 who survives him. Their marriage remains a testament to a true, boundless and selfless love. David would often sing, draw, rhyme and wax philosophical about his devotion to his “beautiful wife.”

David is also survived by loving son Cole Wilmot and husband Greg Wilmot of Concord, New Hampshire, devoted daughter Leigh Wilmot of Westford, Massachusetts, and her partner Lucy Fernandez of Brooklyn, NY, brother Chris Wilmot and wife Lois Wilmot of Deering, New Hampshire, sister Beth Keddy and husband Mark Keddy of Chester, New Hampshire, niece Nicole (Wilmot) Leite and husband Robert Leite of Concord, New Hampshire, and nephew Matthew Wilmot of Ashland, New Hampshire. David is also survived by his beloved brother-in-law Anthony Jacobs, wonderful cousins Billy and Barry Gaw and their families and many, many friends of all walks of life.

David’s spirituality and relationship with the Lord proved a cornerstone of his life and imbued him with the strength needed to maintain his graciousness, humor and passion for life despite his physical challenges. David was a gifted children’s book author and illustrator, avid musician, and passionate environmental and public health activist. He was known for his incredibly diverse interests:  from creative writing and literature to bird watching, from the history of the Boston Red Sox, to advocating for the rights of whom Christ calls “the last and the least.”

But above all, David, as a husband, as a father, as a brother, as a human being, was a decent man of extraordinary character.  He was a kind and compassionate soul, generous of spirit, sharp-witted, larger than life, brave to the very end. He never let the illness that took his life define him. He will be remembered fondly by so many people, that if humble David were still with us, he might be shocked.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2020, between 4 and 7PM EST at the Quealy Funeral Home in Abington, Massachusetts.

The family requests that people make donations in support of Old Colony Hospice in lieu of sending flowers as their employees and volunteers are, as David would often say, “angels on earth.”

Please also be advised that attendees must wear facial masks/coverings and that current physical distancing must be followed to provide as safe a space as possible for those paying respects.  Guidance will be provided upon an attendee’s arrival so all can feel comfortable celebrating David’s life.
