John David Gilbert

John D. Gilbert of Whitman, January 22, 2021, age 92, loving husband of the late Rachel Gilbert; Loving son of the late Richard and Mary Gilbert; Loving father of Joanne M. Connolly of Whitman; Beloved grandfather of Kerri J. Connolly of Providence, RI and Amy R. Connolly of Whitman; Loving brother of Mrs. Marie Anderson of Monrovia, CA and the late Richard Gilbert, James Gilbert, Lawrence Gilbert, Gerald Gilbert, Francis Gilbert and Mrs. Ellen Schaefer; Also, survived by several nieces and nephews on both east and west coasts.

John grew up in Hingham and worked for the family asphalt business for a time. He studied in Boston to become an electrician and worked for Fisher Pierce, General Electric., Harvard University and for General Dynamics Shipbuilders in Quincy, where he retired from after 22 years of service. John loved to read, especially detective and crime novels and also loved to watch the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots games. He enjoyed playing checkers, and a good game of ping pong, now and then. John loved traveling with his wife and Hawaii was their favorite destination.

John was a WWII Airforce veteran. He was a kind, patient, generous, easy going father and grandfather. His sweet nature will be dearly missed. John loved animals, but especially his big orange cat, Jack.

Visitation will be held at the Quealy & Son Funeral Home 116 Adams Street, Abington Wednesday January 27 from 4 to 6pm. Funeral mass Thursday January 28 at 9am in St. Bridget Church, Abington. Please go directly to church for mass and the church is currently at a 50 person capacity). Interment St. Patrick Cemetery, Rockland.
