Marion A Carlson

Marion Adelaide (Cypher) Carlson was born on January 17, 1947 in Port Huron, Michigan. At an early age, her family moved to Weymouth, MA due to her father’s station assignment for the Coast Guard. She graduated from Weymouth High School in 1964, where she was heavily involved in the arts. She then graduated from New England School of Art in Boston. Later in her career, she earned a degree from Massasoit Community College.
 

Marion married Weymouth native and high school sweetheart, Allan A. Carlson, on September 20,1969. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and family to destinations such as Hawaii, Florida, Arizona, spots along the East Coast and Alaska. She took many special trips to visit with dear friends and family. Marion also traveled abroad to Italy (to study art and learn native Italian cooking) and to Jerusalem for religious studies.
 

Marion and Allan’s two boys’, Matthew and Brian, were near and dear to her. Some of the absolute best memories were family trips to New Hampshire (North Conway) and to the Cape (Falmouth). Whether it was a ride on the Cog Railway up Mt. Washington or skimming across the smooth waters in the family boat near Washburn Island, she always had a smile on her face during those cherished times.
 

Marion’s passion for the arts led her to teach others about the creative side of life that could be expressed through paintings, stain glass designs, freehand and technical drawings. Having a background in graphic arts allowed her to experience a number of work settings. She taught art classes at Derby Academy and the Jewish Community Center. She was a faculty member and gallery artist at South Shore Art Center and painted a life-sized mural on the side of Bailey’s Garage in Abington. She had an independent art studio at the old ET Wright building in Rockland (she was a member of the Fourth Floor Artists), and taught vacation art camps at the North River Art Society. Her love of the arts led her to teach her craft to people of all ages and people with special needs. She had the innate ability to make something absolutely beautiful out of nothing.
 

Her strong Christian faith in God was central in her life and she always spoke about the importance of having a personal relationship with Him. During her boys’ childhood, she was a Sunday school teacher and Vacation Bible School instructor at East Bridgewater Covenant Church. For the last several years, she and her husband have been attending South Shore Baptist Church.
 

Marion recently illustrated a children’s book called “Sea Glass and Rainbows”,
poems of summer for kids. Some of her favorite projects included painting specific scenes (ocean, beach, sand dunes, etc.) or murals in someone’s home. She also painted a ceramic lobster for the Plymouth Lobster Crawl. It was always a good feeling when she placed or ribboned in a juried art show.
 

She was blessed with a God-given gift of being a good listener. Always willing to sacrifice her own time to lend a hand to a person in need, provide a hug for a stranger or friend who was in pain, and to tend to those who may have been forgotten. She had a laughter that was contagious.
 

Family meant everything to “Ma”. She loved her husband and boys with all her heart. That love extended to her daughter-in-laws, sisters, brother, sister in-law, nephews, nieces, and related family members. A special place in her heart was carved out for her two granddaughters, Sophia Carlson, and Leah Carlson. She had many, many dear life- long friends including those within the art community, neighbors, and her church community.
 

Marion passed away surrounded by family. She will be missed dearly. She has a set of angel wings ready for her in heaven.
 

She’s survived by her husband, Allan A. Carlson of Abington; Son, Matthew, and his wife, Kellie Carlson (Geer) and daughter, Leah Carlson of Weymouth, Son, Brian, and his wife, Amy Carlson (Baker) and daughter, Sophia Carlson of Kingston.
Sister, Susan Russell, of Florida. Daughter, of the late Kenneth and Ethel Cypher. Predeceased by her sister, Cynthia Cypher, and brother, Kenneth Cypher.
 

There will be a wake on Wednesday, November 3,2021 from 4pm – 7pm at Quealy and Son Funeral Home located at 116 Adams Street, Abington, MA 02351. A grave side memorial service to will be held Thursday, November 4, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the Mount Vernon Cemetery located at 227 Central St., Abington.
 

In celebration of her memory, memorial donations may be made to the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, MA or the North River Art Society in Marshfield, MA
