Mary Giniewicz

Mary A. Giniewicz (Aunt Mary) left us on June 22 at the age of 93 to be reunited with her beloved Pa (Martin) and Ma (Stefania) and her sisters, Stef, Helen, Alice, Kay, Blanche, and Tek.  Mary was born in Abington on September 2, 1928 to Martin and Stefania (Bosak) Giniewicz, both who emigrated from Poland.  As the youngest of the seven sisters, Mary’s life adventure was so fulfilling and well-lived that most of us can only dream about it.

Mary was proud of her Polish heritage in addition to being a true Abingtonian, having been born in Abington, living in the same house on Washington Street for 91 years and only moving after health issues required her to move to Braintree.

Mary attended Abington schools and was a graduate of the Class of 1946.  During her high school years she was a member of the Drama Club (who couldn’t see that one coming?), a member of the Basketball Team for 3 years, including co-captain her senior year, and a Cheerleader during her senior year.  As a teenager she worked as a nanny for a family in Hull.  Upon graduation from Abington High School, Mary started her professional career at the North Abington Co-Operative Bank.  She then transitioned to the Boston Globe, working in the Classified Ad department, and was very proud of her long and illustrious career, making lifelong friends and meeting people from all walks of life.

After retirement, as part of her daily routine, Mary sat at her kitchen table reading the Boston Globe from front to back, providing her with information on every topic which allowed her to discuss any subject matter with anyone at anytime.

Mary had many interests throughout her life.  Among her favorites was traveling, whether it be by ocean cruise or plane.  She visited so many different countries her passport looked like a world atlas.  Annually, she visited Aruba and spent treasured time with nieces, nephews, and friends from all over the US, renewing longtime friendships.  Mary was especially excited and proud of her visit to Poland, the birthplace of her parents.  Another favorite was trips to casinos, there wasn’t a casino that Mary didn’t know and that they didn’t know her.  Overnight trips to Foxwoods with family and friends were a “must do” and were scheduled several times a year.  She loved her class reunions and monthly restaurant visits with her close circle of friends.  She also enjoyed bowling and belonged to women’s leagues at Timberlanes in Abington.  Mary was a devout supporter of St. Bridget’s Church and School in Abington, St. Vincent DePaul, and she had a special place in her heart for the children of St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Any place Mary went, whether known as Mary, Aunt Mary, Mary G, or maybe her name was unknown (but Mary sure wasn’t), everyone recognized her by her signature hat, the baseball cap with the beautiful flower on the front.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Martin and Stefania (Bozak) Giniewicz of Abington; her sisters, Stefania Giniewicz, Helen Farrell and her husband Donald, Alice Mahoney and her husband Francis, and Katherine Sniger and her husband John of Abington; Blanche Dubrowski and her husband John, and Tekla Ann Cicone and her husband Tony of Brockton. She was also predeceased by her nephew, Tony Cicone Jr. of Brockton.

Mary is survived by her nieces and nephews (including spouses), John Sniger (Carol - deceased), Janet Oriola (James), Patricia Mahoney, Kathleen Hayes, Donna Donovan (Kevin), Linda Doiron (William), of Abington; Francis Mahoney (Flora) of CA; Mary Ann Chafin (Michael - deceased) of SC; John Dubrowski of Brockton; Charles Dubrowski, Thomas Dubrowski (Barbara), of Middleboro; David Farrell (Carol) of Rockland; Gene Cicone of FL; Donald Farrell (Catherine) of Hanson.

Mary leaves many precious grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces, and great grandnephews.

Mary’s family would like to thank the dedicated and loving staff of Sunrise Senior Living of Braintree for their care of Mary.  She was treated with respect and compassion during her stay at Sunrise. 

We hope that in Mary’s memory those who cared for her make a loving effort to appreciate those moments we have with each other.

Visitation will be held at the Quealy & Son Funeral Home 116 Adams Street, Abington on Saturday July 2 from 9am to 11am, followed by a funeral service at 11am. Interment St. Patrick Cemetery, Rockland.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mary may be made to St. Vincent DePaul c/o St. Bridget’s Church in Abington.
