Sigurds Kraulitis Sr. Obituary

Sigurds Talivalds Kraulitis Sr. left this world on July 2nd at the age of 82 years. Sig died peacefully at home where he had been receiving hospice care for lung cancer.

Sig was born in Riga, Latvia and came to this country with his family, after escaping under cover of night from his home, when communist Russia took over the Latvian government in 1944. He arrived in the United States in 1948 after several years in displaced pesons camps in Austria.

The two defining influences of Sig's life have been his Latvian heritage and his military service. Latvian folk songs have touched his heart on many occasions, particularly upon his first return visit to his native land in 1997, when sung by his Latvian aunt and cousins as a welcome home. Sig served in the Marines during the early days of the Vietnam war. In 2004, he took a position at the military base in Qatar, for the department of defense, reviewing documents gathered from Iraq during the Gulf war.

Sig loved the sea and sailing amd was a skilled navigator of Massachusetts Bay waters. He loved creating a home and comfortable outdoor space where flowers and birds were welcome. And he loved cooking special foods on special occasions, having made his Latvian pieroges as recently as Easter 2022. Sig enjoyed oil painting as a hobby. Some of his paintings grace the walls of his own home and the homes of friends. He also was serious about golf and spent several enjoyable years playing in a league at the Rockland golf course.

Sig was preceded in death by his sisters, Ingrida and Viviana. He was loved and will be remembered with love by Carole, his wife of 27 years, by his daughter Michelle of Naples FL and his son Sig jr. of Hudson, NH and his wife Kamie. His step-son Patrick, with his wife Tuuli and two beautiful granddaughters, Oliivia and Roosi, also hold him in their hearts. Several nieces and nephews, sisters- and brothers-in-law will all recall happy times that included Sig.

A celebration of life will be held at Quealy and son funeral home, 116 Adams St, Abington on Sunday, July 10th at 11 AM. Sig loved flowers. But alternately, memorials in Sig's name may be made to Hospice of the South Shore, 30 Reservoir Park Drive, Rockland, MA 02370
